Hollywood’s most famous couple is on a break… indefinitely as superstar actress Angelina Jolie filed for divorce yesterday from her movie star husband, Brad Pitt.
The news was first reported by TMZ, which claimed to have legal court documents which said that Julie was displeased with how Pitt was raising their six children together and thought that with his usage of marijuana, alcohol, and his “anger problems,” that he had created an unfit environment for their children.
The NY Daily News also gained access to the legal documents which state that Julie is filing for divorce because of “irreconcilable differences.”
The split comes after rumors began circulating that Pitt had been cheating on Julie with his World War II co-star Marion Cotillard for months and that Julie had hired a private eye to discover the truth.
“She hired a private eye because she felt that he was fooling around with her on the set, and it turns out, he was,” a source said to The Post. “And that was the final straw.”
Sources close to both Julie and Cotillard have denied these affair accusations.
“The absolute truth is that there is no third-party involvement,” a source close to Julie said to the NY Daily News. “No one has been hired at any stage. It’s absolutely not true and quite painful that anyone would believe it. They’re better people than that. They don’t spy on each other.”
“[Cotillard and Guillaume Canet] are still very much together,” a source close to Cotillard said, Page Six reports. “They have been a couple since 2007 and have one child but have never married.”
Pitt and Jolie have been married for what seems like a relatively short timeframe-since Aug. 2014- but Brangelina has been together since 2004, that’s about 12 years of public romance.
Since they got together, many fans have speculated that Jolie was the rift that led to the divorce from Pitt and “Friends” actress, Jennifer Anniston, in 2005 but Jolie has always denied that they had an affair during his marriage to Anniston.
According to the NY DailyNews, Julie claims that they fell in love when they filmed the 2005 action movie “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
The court filings show that Julie has requested sole physical custody of all six kids: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne with Pitt having visitation rights. If the court agrees with her request this would mean that the children would live with her full-time and would only be allowed to see Pitt through visitations.
Julie also chose not to request spousal support but the divorce has come as a shock to many such as Julie’s father, actor Jon Voight, who never saw it coming.
“I’m really sad about this. I’m sending my love to Angie and the kids,” Voight said to the Daily News. “Obviously it must be something very serious.”
Pitt and Julie have also released their own individual statements on the matter.
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” Pitt said in a statement to People. “I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
“This decision was made for the health of the family,” Julie’s celebrity attorney, Laura Wasser, also said in a statement, according to People. “She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.”
According to the court documents, Julie listed Sept. 15 as her official date of separation from Pitt. If you’re interested in looking at the court documents, please click here.
