Friday, Sept. 23, former presidential candidate and current Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz has decided to vote his conscience and has endorsed Donald Trump for president.
“After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump,” Cruz wrote on his Facebook.
Cruz made reference to his statement last year where he promised that he would support the Republican nominee no matter who it would be and said that he is keeping his word. He also said that he is endorsing Trump because even though they’ve had their differences, having Democrat presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, takeover the White House is “wholly unacceptable” and he has always been #NeverHillary.
This endorsement comes after Cruz received months of intense backlash for failing to endorse Trump back at the RNC Cleveland Convention that was held in July.
During the convention, Cruz gave one of the most powerful speeches for the conservative base but asked voters to “Vote their Conscience” instead of “Vote Trump.” The backlash that followed grew so strong that if Cruz had been currently running for reelection of his Senate seat, he would have lost horribly.
Besides supporting his party, Cruz listed six points as to why a Trump presidency is worth voting for over a Clinton presidency, citing the appointment of constitutional Supreme Court justices that would be “in the mold of Scalia,” repealing Obamacare, bringing jobs back to the American people, ending illegal immigration, protecting America’s national security from threats like radical Islamic terrorism and supporting the right to have freedom of speech on the Internet.
Clinton, Cruz wrote, would appoint only “left-wing ideologue[s]” to the Supreme Court, veto the legislation Republicans want to pass to repeal ObamaCare, continue Obama’s “war on coal” to destroy America’s oil and gas industry, continue Obama’s executive lawless amnesty, allow potential terrorists to enter America under the guise of unvetted refugees and is in support of Obama’s plan to hand control of the Internet to an international community of stakeholders, which Cruz said, includes Russia, China and Iran. Letting countries like this regulate the Internet, Cruz said, would threaten our rights to freedom of speech.
“If Clinton wins,” Cruz wrote. “[W]e know – with 100% certainty—that she would deliver on her left-wing promises, with devastating results for our country.”
Cruz’s endorsement also follows the release of a list by Trump’s campaign of potential Supreme Court justice nominees that Trump would be interested in appointing to the court if he wins the presidency. You can view the list here.
Trump, Cruz wrote, is the only thing standing in the way of Clinton harming millions of Americans.
“A year ago, I pledged to endorse the Republican nominee, and I am honoring that commitment,” Cruz wrote. “And if you don’t want to see a Hillary Clinton presidency, I encourage you to vote for him.”
