Saturday, Oct. 15, fashion guru Betsey Johnson hosted a Meet and Greet event at Miami’s Dadeland Mall’s Macy as part of her tour event to present her new collection, Betsey Johnson XOX Trolls. As a devoted fan who constantly refers to her as “my designer,” I knew I couldn’t miss this opportunity to actually meet her face-to-face.
The day of the event, Macy was transformed into Betseyville, and in true Betsey fashion, stylish glamour was around every corner, from the stylish light-up Betsey Johnson rollerblade shoe car to the chic and glamorous disco-ready meeting space that was adorned with glitter pillows, pink and red chandeliers and a DJ.
Of course, the place doesn’t have the Betsey touch if you don’t find some type of dancing and cotton candy in the mix. Stylish rollerblading dancing Troll girls skated around, passing free cotton candy in colorful martiniesque glasses.
Throwing rose petals everywhere she went, Johnson started her own little dance party, shouting out “Rock & Troll” before giving her fans some background information on her collection, how it’s approved by her granddaughters and how much it meant to have her fans be there with her to celebrate the new line.
The new collection was done in collaboration with Macy’s and was inspired by DreamWorks Animation’s new upcoming movie “Trolls” that is scheduled to be released on Nov. 4.
“Trolls” is an animated music-filled comedy that transports the audience into a world that is populated by optimistic, dancing, singing Trolls and pessimistic Bergens who need trolls in their stomachs to be happy. After Bergens attack Troll Village, the happiest Troll ever born- Poppy- and the overly-cautious Branch set off on a journey to rescue the Trolls.
The new Betsey Johnson XOX Trolls collection features a range of quirky, fun, stylish Troll-inspired outfits, accessories and daily essentials, ranging from clock resembling handbags, rings and earrings featuring Troll-inspired hair, “Rock N Troll” shirts and “Have a Glitter Day” mugs and notebooks. The new line is exclusively available at Macys.com and at select Macy stores and retails, with a price range between $15 and $140 dollars.
Besides the free cotton candy, fans were also given a free Betsey Johnson tote bag while they waited in line. Additionally, fans who made a purchase of $50 or more that day on any Betsey Johnson item were given VIP status and also received a Betsey Johnson selfie-stick, some Betsey Johnson ribbon bracelets and a Macy’s gift card. Fans who purchased something specifically from the new Betsey Johnson XOX Trolls collection also received free tickets to an advance screening of the movie.
Due to my fangirlness, I made my VIP purchase about 3 hours before she was scheduled to arrive, and in short, was the second person in the VIP line, only missing the first slot by a couple of minutes to a girl who drove five hours to make it to the event.
Right behind me was a young girl who was dressed head-to-toe in Betsey fashion and eventually won one of the many raffles that was done prior to Johnson’s appearance, winning one free Betsey Johnson item of her choice with a price of up to $200. A couple people behind her was a mother who went all Betsey for the event as well and had a baby who “coincidentally” was also called “Betsey.”
Clearly, us #BetseyBabes don’t mess around.
Sitting down next to Johnson, having her recognize the purse I was sporting as one of hers and hugging her was surreal. During my time with her, Johnson said she was so happy that me and all her other fans had come out to see her.
According to Johnson, the fact that her fans love her collections so much to take the time to actually come out and support her not only meant the world to her but was a sign that she was doing something right.
As a university student studying journalism, I also knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ask her at least one question about her design process before I left.
Johnson has been in the fashion business for 55 years and after being in the business for so long, whenever she starts designing for her new collection, the ideas just hit her.
“After being 55 years in the business, it just hits me,” Johnson said. “If it doesn’t just come to you after being in the business for so long, you’re in the wrong business.”
