Kanye West boycotted the presidential election this year but during a concert in San Jose, California on Thursday, Nov. 17 he confessed to his fans that if he had gone to the polls, his vote- unlike the votes of other celebrities- wouldn’t have gone to Hillary Clinton.
“I said something that was kind of politically correct. I told y’all I didn’t vote, right?” West said. “But I didn’t tell you- I guess I told you- but if I would’ve voted, I would’ve voted on Trump.”
During his confession, West said that just because he was a Trump supporter didn’t mean he was against Black Lives Matter or that he didn’t believe in women’s rights or gay marriage but Trump, he said, would have gained his vote because of his “genius” approach, from how he used social media to his unfiltered language.
“There are methods, nonpolitical methods, of speaking that I like. That I feel are very futuristic and that style and that method of communication has proven that it can beat a politically correct way of communication,” he said. “And I [agree] with that.”
West also said that he felt personally victimized being a celebrity Trump supporter.
According to West, he didn’t voice his support for Trump before the election because his management team told him not to say it out loud. But celebrities, West said, are allowed to have their own political views even if it goes against the common Democrat status celebrities tend to have.
“I hate the fact that because I’m a celebrity everyone told me not to say that I loved the debates. I loved his approach,” West said.
Trump’s approach, he said, wasn’t just entertaining but “absolutely genius” because it worked. West also stressed that at the end of the day, it didn’t matter who people voted for and that he was willing to bet that 20 to 30 percent of the people inside the concert hall had voted for Trump instead of Clinton.
“People got the right to vote for whoever they want to vote for. That’s the right to vote. That is our right,” West said.
